We left Stewart on Monday early in the morning since the weather was going to be hot in the 30’s. Beautiful ride back through the mountains passing several glaciers again and…ops had a close call with a black bear crossing the highway. We both had to stomp on our brakes pretty hard which definitely had us both wide awake!
Way back in Dawson City someone told us we should definitely check out Smithers. Lovely European town with lots of European bakeries etc. Well, to us it looked like any other town, pleasant but not extraordinary and again it was mighty hot and we didn’t feel like walking through town with motorcycle stuff on. So, we got our groceries and then quickly left town. Oh the wonderful sidekicks!! By now I think we went through each and every flavour done without milk! I “bargained” for a salad and had to leave strawberries and cherries behind, but next time I swear I am going to have some fruit!! Ah yes and let’s not forget the beer!! I have to admit when it’s that hot, a cold beer tastes like heaven!
We tried to pick a Provincial Park from the map in the area where we could camp for the night. Only one on our way but it was about 45 km off the main highway and had a lake to cool off. Perfect!
Oh and I made the first connection for Mexico. We ran into 2 guys at a rest area where we stopped to have some water. Martin (the father) and Tim (the son) on their V-Stroms just about to leave. We got talking and I saw the Mexican licence plates. Tim whose English was better told me that they were on their way home to the Baha Peninsula and that they were as far as the Arctic Circle. When I told him that we were on our way to the Baha, he gave me his e-mail address and told me to contact him when we are there and that they would be happy to help if we would have any problems in Mexico. How nice!!
Well Babine Lake, where we camped turned out to be a decent but oh so cold lake with flies and mosquitos swarming big time so we decided to leave after one night. This morning we left early again, rode for a good 5 -6 hours past Prince George and are now at 10 Mile Lake close to the town of Quesnel BC. We went for a swim already, mosquitos are less, so we will stay for 2 nights and relax tomorrow.
Our goal is to head down to Langley BC, to avoid having to drive into Vancouver since Langley also has a Mountain Equipment Co-op store where we can buy a couple of things we still need and then decide whether we will send some unnecessary stuff home.
