Don't lose your dreams to protect your days

Whitehorse

Well, it is Wednesday and … we’re still in Whitehorse! We’ve ben here staying with Bill and Emily since Sunday afternoon. I guess it is way too nice here. We are very much enjoying their incredible hospitality. Bill has a wealth of knowledge about this area as well as about the history of the gold rush.

Miles Canyon

He showed us parts of the Yukon River the miles canyon for example, where all the Klondike stampeders had to struggle through on their way to the goldfields. Unfortunately I had to see a dentist on Monday because a cracked filling had to be repaired and I didn’t want to wait until we were in Central America.

Bill, who is teaching at the local catholic high school invited us to a special event at his school. He organized a day of celebration in honor of the Phillipino Independence day. They had a flag raising ceremony with singing of the national anthem and served some traditional Phillipino food .The Phillipino population here in Whitehorse and also in all of the Yukon has increased quite a bit in the last 5-6 years, so they wanted to honor this day together with their Phillipino students. We had a lovely BBQ and salad dinner together with Bill and Emily’s neighbors who joined us and brought their own dinner with them. So easy and non-complicated!!

Tuesday was saved for motorcycle maintenance. Heinz worked on both of them, they needed an oil change before we would go further north to the Dempster Highway and Alaska and certainly a good clean. That was probably pointless since we will go on to gravel roads from here. Oh well, they can look nice at least for a day! We took Bill and Emily out for dinner that night to a Mexican restaurant ( Sanchez cantina!), which was very delicious. Perfect timing to ask them if we could stay for one more day since we haven’t seen much yet of Whitehorse and the surroundings!!

They were nice enough to tolerate us for one more day! So today we walked to downtown Whitehorse and spend a couple of hours at the McBride Museum of Yukon history. We have seen a demonstration of how to pan for gold, a lot of artifacts of the gold rush era etc, very interesting. We stocked up on good german style bread from the ” alpine bakery” which is super delicious ( yeah Penelope!!). In the afternoon we hiked up a mountain along the fish lake about half an hour from here.

So one last dinner with Bill and Emily tonight with another friend of them and her cute little daughter and we will finally leave this lovely place tomorrow and head up north to Dawson City and the Dempster Highway hoping for good weather and good road conditions. It is weird for us having such a long time of daylight. The sun goes down maybe at 11 to 1130 pm and comes back up at around 5. It doesn’t even get really dark at night.
